If your not sure what an alpha horse is, then read this book. The author gives you great insights into an alpha horse. I like the way she gives you a couple of examples and what was done with the alpha horses. I totally agree with her as you can't push an alpha horse. The author also discusses the importance of ground work, being consistent and having the stamina to finish any lesson you start with them. I'm reviewing this audiobook from the viewpoint of an older rider.
I have a very green mare that I'm training as a saddle horse for recreational riding. She's the dominant horse in my four-horse herd and she periodically seeks to assert her dominion over me. I loved "Reaching Alpha Horses" because it gave me the encouragement I need to continue with the slow and patient approach to training this horse. Ms. Levin's examples help me structure my daily interactions with this horse to strengthen her trust and advance her training.
I've seen some reviews that criticize the book for not offering exercises. For me the key to working with my Alpha horse is to plan structured exercises and also use non-structured time to help her learn and strengthen our partnership. Because I'm semi-retired I have the time to take the slow path and promote relaxation as well as learning.
The audiobook format allows me to review Ms. Levin's guidance on the drive to the barn or while doing mindless tasks around the barn. When we hit a training speed bump, I'll be returning to this book for encouragement and affirmation.
