Book one of the 'Viking Odyssey' series.
950AD on the western shores of the Norse kingdom, ten-year-old Kregin is about to set sail for Iceland on his father’s ship, the ‘Vigtyr’.
Three families, headed by Old Man Jarl, Grey Skar, and Kregin’s father, Raff Thralson, are embarking on an odyssey.
They are fleeing to escape the vengeance of a King enraged by the families’ encroachment on his trading preserves in Finnmark.
Just before their departure, the King sends a message through Drak, a fierce and implacable warrior the King’s laws will be enforced — even in exile in Iceland.
The three families are incensed at this high-handed edict and decide that they must resist with any means at their disposal.
With the ‘Vigtyr’ on the point of sailing, Kregin bids a temporary farewell to his friend Helga, who is also Grey Skar’s granddaughter, and receives from her an incredible warning Drak, Grey Skar and Jarl have formed an alliance, and intend to attack the ‘Vigtyr’ at sea, kill all on board and claim the ship and everything on it as a prize.
Kregin dismisses Helga’s warning as the fanciful imaginings of a young girl, and follows his brothers on board the ‘Vigtyr’ without divulging the warning to a living soul.
Not long into the voyage Kregin has cause to bitterly regret his silence.
The attack, when it comes, is swift and vicious, and changes the course of Kregin’s life.
He escapes the carnage and undergoes a vital rite of passage, but the glorious odyssey has become a lone flight.
The mettle of a warrior is forged in battle, but it seems that Kregin’s character will be forged in a frozen, ice-bound land…
‘Forged in Ice’, the first book in Ken Hagan’s ‘Viking Odyssey’ series, is a gripping Viking adventure filled with fights, family feuds, and action packed drama.
Ken Hagan’s interest in Viking history stems from his love of Icelandic sagas and visits to Viking-age graves in Norway and Sweden. He studied languages and linguistics at Trinity College Dublin, where he was Arts Editor of the renowned college newspaper, Trinity News. He has had a successful career in corporate management, including assignments in the Middle East, but has always maintained his interest in writing and drama, and is now fulfilling a long-held ambition to write his own Viking saga.

This was a difficult book. I wanted to like it. I write Norse fantasy and I love Norse historical fiction, so I really wanted to like it. But it is a hard book. I'll leave aside technical quibbles like disagreement over spelling of words (e.g. "bale" for "bail" in English, "guothie' for, I think, "godi" or "godhi" in Old Norse, etc.) and such, and focus on the story itself. 'Forged in Ice" is billed as a "Viking Odyssey" - but Vikings do not come into it much. It is about families that leave Norway around the time the monarchy there was becoming tyrannical and set out to settle Iceland. It is a hard journey, and a hardscrabble life they find once there. The author does an excellent job of portraying exactly how difficult and dirty and poor life in settlement-age Iceland was, going into perhaps too much detail about the birthing of lambs or such. It's a hard story of a hard life. But it moves slowly, there is precious little that actually happens . . . as much as I wanted to give this 5 stars, or 4 at least, I had to settle on 3 for an adequate story that adequately portrays what life was like in settlement-age Iceland.Product details

Just did not like it
was so-so
Good read, but did drag in a few places. Sometimes the characters got mixed up, but for the most part a very good book.
Liked the story and the details of the Iceland community. Good dialogue and descriptions. Some of the terms are obscure but I assumed they were researched and accurate.
Not the most exciting story. The series name is a little misleading as there are no actual vikings in this story. Maybe the author will add vikings in the next book. I will never know.
Good tale of the Norse, specifically in Iceland. Had to look up some of the words, since they were archaic...but that's OK. Gave a clear idea how brutal their life was. But it just ENDED abruptly, with a couple of the storylines still unresolved!
I really liked this book...It was maybe just a bit too short! Looking forward to the next in the series. The story was interesting with many twists and turns, the characters we're convincing and I empathised with the main protagonist. The level of detail in terms of the culture and nature of the world the characters occupied was incredible, down to minutest detail but never getting on the way of the story. I've never really looked into the history of the Vikings previously and I've found myself reading up on the Scandinavian diaspora and it's impact on Northern Europe to this day. Heartily recommended.
