“Yes sir. Well, there are three men outside trying to kill me....”
“Quite right,” Mr. Frendlyer said. “And today is Landing Day. You came off the ship that landed today, and have been classified a peon.... I’m happy to say that everything is in order. The Landing Day Hunt ends at sundown. You can leave here with the knowledge that everything is correct and that your rights have not been violated.”
“Leave here? After sundown, you mean.”
Mr. Frendlyer shook his head and smiled sadly. “I’m afraid not. According to the law you must leave here at once.”
“But they’ll kill me!”
“That’s very true. Unfortunately it can’t be helped. A victim by definition is one who is to be killed.... We protect rights, not victims.”

The Status Civilization eBook Robert Sheckley

A novel of the fifties. The starting of the book is good enough to stand the passing of time. A planet where all criminals from Earth are sent, without their memory of their life on Earth, develops as a criminally bent society, where evil is worshippped, the way to reach a high status is to kill other Citizens. Also the weather is hellish, as it sometimes happens.
If you break the law, you suffer the consequences, but it is still within this hellish planet.
Will Barent does not remember well why he was sent there, he knows that he is a murderer, but he does not like to kill.
And there is strange girl who helps him from the very first day he lands.
The end of the book is not worth much, it could have been a great book, it becomes a good book.
A connection could be made to Dune, where the Emperor's guards, the Sardaukar were raised on a prison planet, and became the greatest warrior of the Universe, before the Fremen came to the Universe. Could it be that Herbert remembered this book ?

The Status Civilization eBook Robert Sheckley Reviews

A very interesting, parallel-worlds, kind of read. Nice plot twist from prison/er control to something far more sinister. However, the ending was a bit disappointing in its brevity. Having worked through the plot permutations it would have been nice to have a good satisfying survivor-gets-the-girl-and-bravely-defies-the-powers-that-be kind of ending. It's implied, but the good meaty details are missing. Still a nice thought-provoking kind of read.
scam or oversight. this supposed daily bargain is available for free. on . also available in a negapack with more stories for 99 cents. same as the supposed bargain. only with more stories. i continue to wish would split reviews into content and format.

And it's even less of a bargain at the list price!

I notice the list price has gone down since my review, but you can still get this and more for the same price in a megapack.

Aaaaaand the price goes up again! What's with this publisher?
It took me awhile to remember reading this book in High School. There was a certain familarity about it when I started it, but I was about half way through it before I remebered actually reading it.

The Science in this book is a little dated, since it was written in 1960, and the mores of a group of criminials do not seem quit right. However the religion of Evil is an interesting take.

This is a pretty fun and fairly light read. I found the ending to be abrupt and less than statisfing, almost as if there was to be a sequel, but I don't remeber ever reading another novel set in this universe.
This story is included in "The Robert Sheckley Megapack 15 Classic Science Fiction Stories" for 99 cents. Plus you get 14 other stories. The short story is very good but the collection is the better deal unless you only want the book for some reason.
This book has elements like the Syndic by CM Kornbluth. A Coven for witch worship devil worship , a flexible jail system with tons of ways to die....I had a better review for this book as i was reding it.. I think maybe the editor told schekley to change some steps in the story. But if thats the way checkly wrote the book then thats the way he wrote it... drugs used to hallucinate to work for and against prisoners a reward system for elimination processes. The war games seem a bit choppy the adventure seems a bit so dangerous I never see the protagonist take a nap. The action just continues...I was disappointed in the ending. the way the advertising of the setup for this book was fantastic, though! It went in a direction i did not expect like it sounds anti climatic like the Syndic.
A man wakes up in a hospital with no memory, but it isn't a hospital. It's a prison ship taking him on an alien planet named Omega. When he is marched out of the ship with a group of other amnesiacs, they are informed that they are all criminals who have been exiled. They are told that their minds have been wiped of all information of their previous life on Earth for the safety of Earth. They are told their crimes and their names but nothing else. The man finds out that his name is Will Barrent and that he is a murderer.

Barrent and his cohort are then dumped into a society where evil is good and individuals advance in status by murder. Barrent advances quite successfully by his reflexes, intelligence and good fortune, rather than by any innate viciousness or sociopathy. He is helped at key times by a mysterious woman, who doesn't exist in the story as anything more than a plot device.

Eventually Barrent gets to the pinnacle of Omega society and discovers that its internal contradictions are about to rip it apart. He fortuitously falls in with the Omegan non-criminal underground and is smuggled back to Earth on a returning prison ship.

Because of the mindwipe, Omegans do not remember anything about Earth, although they have conjectures about a fierce police state ruled through informers. What Barrent finds, however, is a world of unthinking conformity. There is no police and there is no crime. There are no local or regional differences. As part of all the conformity, status is also key on Earth as everyone knows their place and keeps to it.

Barrent ultimately learns the secret of Earth everything is maintained in proper order by deep psychological programming, which has resulted in stagnation. Because of its stagnation, Earth is ripe for conquest by Omega, but the result will be a mixing of the better natures of Earth and Omega and a return of the human spirit of adventure.

The book is clearly a product of the time it was written, the 1950s. Sheckley is obviously preaching a sermon against conformity, the Eisenhower years and Madison Avenue. The book is long on ideas and short on character. For example, the female character appears to be slated as someone important for Barrent's future, but that idea is discarded without a moment of reflection. Nonetheless, the dated feel of the book is charming, and the story moves along like a connect the dot picture. The Status Civilization is a quick, enjoyable but totally forgettable read.
